Best Age for Natural Newborn Photos | Philadelphia Newborn Photographer

One amazing benefit of doing a lifestyle newborn session in your home is that the timing is much more flexible than traditional, posed studio newborn portraits because the baby does not need to sleep for the entire session in order to create amazing memories together.

Option One: First 2 Weeks After Baby Is Born

We'll want to get your session on the calendar very soon after your baby is born if you want to capture your baby in the tiniest sleepy newborn phase. You can still get some awake photos in these early days as the baby typically wakes up when we change outfits, but this is typically too early for alert, focused eye contact with the family or toward the camera. Be sure to reach out to schedule your session right after the baby is born if you have your heart set on sleeping newborn portraits.

Option Two: 3-4 Weeks Old

If you have your heart set on getting some bright-eyed, expressive newborn portraits, I recommend scheduling your newborn session for around 3-4 weeks after the baby is born. The baby usually still sleeps for part of the session at this age--especially if you swaddle the baby right after a feeding. But when the baby is awake, the expressions at this age are simply magical. This is also a great option for moms who need a little extra time to recover, settle in at home, and feel ready for photos. Whatever you do, don't listen to the traditional studio newborn photographers who try to tell you that once the baby is older than two weeks you've missed the window for beautiful newborn photos. For me, 3-4 weeks is the sweet spot for lifestyle newborn photos because I love it when the baby begins to make eye contact and interact with the family, and I love the option to get a variety of sleepy and expressive newborn photos throughout the session.

Option Three: 5-6 Weeks Old

The great thing about lifestyle newborn photos is that they are so flexible, and there is never a wrong time to capture beautiful memories with your baby! Some of the babies you see in my newborn portfolio are even 5-6 weeks old, and they are some of my favorite sessions! This is right around the time when babies start smiling and interacting with their parents, and I guarantee your heart will melt when you see your baby smiling at you in your image gallery. Whether it's the unpredictability of pandemic life, extra time spent in the hospital after birth, or families who reach out to schedule their newborn session after the baby is born, there are so many reasons why doing natural newborn photos a little later might be perfect for your family.
